Lillian with her husband Sidney Matthews…

Of special mention is the passing of one of our own very dear and lifetime members. Lillian Matthews died in her nineties after having lived a very full, wonderful life which included such incredible memories as being an American Club founder, an incredible bridge player and a loving wife and mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was truly an amazing lady.  Many of us dearly miss Lillian and share fond memories of how over 40 years, she and her husband Sydney organized parties, bridge conferences and bridge cruises. Because of her efforts in so many areas, she was considered an Ambassador for the Costa del Sol and the Bridge Club affectionately referred to Lillian as "The Bridge Queen."

In order too appreciate more of the significant contributions Lillian made to the American Club and to Marbella greater society, please kindly refer to the accompanying celebration of some of the details of her life, a special feature prepared together with this month’s newsletter especially for you, our members.  Lillian’s star burns brightly among us all.

Final Remarks

Now that the Academy Awards are over, we welcome you to begin a new red carpet season together (correction: make that a RED, WHITE and BLUE carpet season!) celebrating this lovely Marbella springtime in high style...with your friends at the American Club.

As we conclude our April Newsletter, I would like to turn your attention to an unlikely source of springtime inspiration: a most wonderful children’s story – one for all ages – called the Story of Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf (1938). The Story of Ferdinand was published more than 50 years ago and is one of the bestselling children's books of all time. Some critics are convinced that Ferdinand is a bull from the Costa del Sol. It is a story about Ferdinand, a peaceful bull who is mistakenly carted from his home pasture, past Ronda, to the bull fights of Madrid.

Forty of these books were donated to the Queens Children’s Psychiatric Center by my father, a children’s doctor, on his retirement from medicine.  The description and drawings of historic Spain are truly spectacular and the message is clear: true happiness is finding your favorite spot in this world (perhaps Marbella?) and taking the time to sit just quietly and smell the flowers.

Happy Easter, Semana Santa, Passover and a very Happy Spring to all our members.

And please remember to smell the flowers!
