LATEST UPDATE: While the Bonfire is burning, we will be entertained by BATUKADA "SAMBA LUZ"
(a local Brazilian Samba Percussion Group)
A little history of the word Bonfire:
A bonfire is a large controlled outdoor fire. The word is a contraction of "bone fire". The practice is believed to derive from the Celtic festival of Samhain when animal bones were burnt to ward off evil spirits. Today the practice is still common with bonfires commonly lit for Midsummer and Halloween night. (and of course in Spain...Noche de San Juan).

As many of you know, we always celebrate this important and very fun American Holiday. The last couple of years we tried different venues and concepts, and this year we are going back to basics! For those of you who have had the opportunity to celebrate a true July 4th in the States, you know it is usually in the back yards of homes, in parks, in the countryside and, of course if possible, on the beach! We certainly do not lack beaches here in Spain, however it is difficult to get a private beach bar to close during the month of July on a Saturday evening for our big party.
Well, we have a true, original chiringuito, located on a secluded beach in Estepona. Owners, Miriam and Pedro, ran a very popular chiringuito on the very same beach where they, unfortunately, were asked to leave in order for Laguna Village to be built. Pedro too k his original structure from the old days and, with the permission of the ayuntamiento, set up on a secluded beach paradise on the Playa Castor between the Rio Castor and Dominion Beach. Some of you may know of them from the past, but for those of you who do not, we invite you to a friendly, family-run authentic "no frills, no gimics" beach bar/chiringuito to celebrate the 4th of July 2009 with your Estepona Board and your fellow members and good friends.
The concept is simple: Castaways meets Gilligan's Island! Dress Code: casual or "tre chic" beachwear , sandals, flip-flops or sneakers/trainers are an "absolute must" as your feet will definitely be in the sand and sea at times. Red, White & Blue is always appreciated and adds to the atmosphere. Ladies, please remember those windy nights on the beach can come up out of nowhere, so bring a wrap! We have some wonderful surprises regarding food (one as you arrive and one at the end), so please bring a good appetite! As we will be eating late due to the heat and the preliminary activites, a suggestion may be to have a late lunch that day.
Important information: Aseos/Toilets on site!
We will have music, dancing, and a bonfire! So if anybody has any old wood (garden wood, old chairs, furniture, etc.) please pack it in your trunk/boot and bring it along to keep the fire burning into the night.
So mark your calendars, as we assume many of you already have, and contact Pamela Becque or me, Joanne, to make sure you are on our list. Numbers are limited this year, so do this soon!
