MARBELLA - MARCH - PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ann McGeehan

There once was a man from Marbella…
Who was an incredible nice fella
He gave up the Pub
For the American Club
Come visit and say a warm hella!

My appreciation of our family´s Irish roots stems from my husbands´ family, who are from Fintown, a scenic little village set in the heart of the Donegal Gaeltacht. The McGeehans arrived in the USA under extremely difficult circumstances as a result of the The Great Irish Potato Famine: a period of mass starvation, disease and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852.  Approximately one million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland, including Mike´s family.  They made their way during an arduous transatlantic journey and created a home in Coaldale, Pennsylvania as coal miners, and are still there to this day.

Interestingly, Spain also enjoys strong connections with Ireland, as evident in the famous Claddagh Ring Story:

Irish Claddagh Rings
are a piece of jewelry wholly synonymous with both the land and the loyalty of the Irish people.  The Claddagh Ring story starts at the rings namesake, a small village in Ireland near the city of Galway. As the story goes, a beautiful woman, Margaret Joyce lived in Galway in the sixteenth century.  One day while doing the family laundry on the bank of a nearby river, she met a wealthy Spanish merchant, who fell in love with her the moment he saw her. They soon married and moved away to Spain.  Margaret Joyce was now Margaret de Rona, the wife of Domingo de Rona.  He left Margaret a widow soon after their marriage.  Apparently he was much older than she and succumbed to the strain of travel and a new marriage.  Margaret was now very wealthy and very homesick.  She soon returned home to Ireland and in 1596 remarried to Oliver Og French, the mayor of Galway.

Her husband, however, was evidently not the domestic type, leaving on a long voyage soon after their marriage.  Margaret, being of an altruistic nature and perhaps searching for meaning and significance in her life, found a way to contribute to her community and glean satisfaction from tangible results.  She began to build bridges all over the province of Connaught with her own money.  Her husband’s constituents most certainly appreciated this gesture and it most likely provided Margaret with a great deal of satisfaction to help her fellow man and leave a legacy of sorts.

The fantastical part of the Claddagh ring story begins here as one day Margaret is on the work site of one of her bridges overseeing the project.  She is sitting down when a large eagle drops in her lap a prototype of a Claddagh Ring.  Legend has it that this ring was a gift from God for her love and selflessness toward others.  This Claddagh ring, said to be adorned with a brilliant stone, was preserved by Margaret’s descendants in the year 1661.

The motto of this Irish ring is “Let love and friendship reign. “  Whether fact or folklore, it is with this spirit of synergy and inextricable links, of connectivity between the Irish and Spanish countries and cultures, and of travels for love and companionship, that we celebrate this month of March together at the American Club of the Costa del Sol, Marbella.

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light,
May good luck pursue you each morning and night.
May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow, and May trouble avoid you wherever you go.
May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and the road downhill all the way to your door.

Ann McGeehan
President

The Spanish B(r)unch - are on a roll… those talented linguists are letting you know they are working hard and having fun. But best of all: they are getting the basics of Spanish!   Next month more…

Spanish w Verrisimo – Spanish teacher and mentor started teaching his first American Club members using his faster than fast self designed method. Watch this multi language genius at work when he comes by at the club house to give one of his party like lectures on the Spanish psyche, culture and language - in his own humorous way.

Tennis
- A stranger came to tennis and grabbed gold!  We found out that his name is Stephen Cole… But the weather was fabulous, so we asked him to stay for lunch and all was forgiven. Congrats, and thanks to also the other winners Jackie and Alex and all tennis players, for a spectacular kick off of the brand new Marbella American Club Tennis Group!

Members with Talent – After Valerie Houben´s book, Charles Powell´s the Churchill Diaries, is at this very moment being read by your fellow members because his book signing was a success and the discussion has lead to a renewed interest in the topic.

The Valentine´s lunch at Amanhavis - was a big hit with the Seklers celebrating their 50th anniversary and Doloros Shaffer showing her big heart. Also due to unanimous praise for outstanding quality and generosity: Leslie and her team are awarded the very first and exclusive:

Marbella  American Club Good ´N Plenty Award
Congratulations Amanhavis: the second group of diners is on their way!

FOR MORE PHOTOS OF THE DAY, CLICK HERE!

And if it had to be this way: In addition to a whole group of true blue Americans, three beautiful Irish career women have joined spontaneously after dropping in for lunch to see what’s doing. They came by because they had heard Leslie on the radio telling about the club’s new activities and events among which our new charity:  the children of Marbella

Wear your best St. Patty’s hats to the lunch at Beckitts: Ann, Anita and Michele,  show us what you’re made off… and welcome to all new members!
